8 Pocklingtons Walk,

Three PhD Students from Leicester!

What's the talk about?

We’re going to be doing something a little different for December’s Skeptics in the Pub: we’re going to host “PubhD Leicester”.

PubhD is monthly event that was started up by Kash Farooq and Regan Naughton in Nottingham on January 22, 2014. At each event, three local researchers, from any academic discipline, explain their work to an audience in a pub in exchange for a pint or two. The talks are at a “pub level” - the idea is that you don’t have to be an academic to understand the talks. PubhD is spreading around the country with PubhDs starting up in Glasgow, Sheffield and Lincoln.

PubhD has a very simple format:

  1. Three speakers will each have 10 minutes to talk about their subject area to an interested audience in a pub.

  2. There will be up to 20 minutes of Q&A per speaker.

  3. Each speaker gets at least one pint (or other drink of their choice).

  4. A whiteboard and coloured pens will be provided.

The speakers for PubhD Leicester are:

  • Dr Sarah Casewell is a researcher at the University of Leicester. She researches both white and brown dwarfs, and has recently begun to investigate the effects of heating on brown dwarf atmosphere by a hot companion.

  • Katie Dexter is a second year PhD physics student. She is undertaking research in nano-medicine and is currently making magnetic nanoparticles for medical applications including potential new cancer treatments and MRI contrast agents.

  • Vicky McGowan is a final year PhD student at the University of Leicester.  She is studying what the movements of the eyes can tell us about the brain process that occur during reading, and in particular, how this can help us understand how reading changes during older age.
